Abstract:
Flood control is an important subject in water engineering. Stilling basins should be designed in such a way that effectively dissipates the excess kinetic energy of the flow. An undesirable scour hole downstream of stilling basin can endanger the safety of dams or basin’s structure. Many researchers, based on flow condition and outlet shape have conducted many experimental investigations and presented different methods for designing of stilling basin. But most of these result in very long basins and uneconomical structures. The stilling basin can be used for pipe and tunnel outlets, and many different methods have been presented for designing of this kind of stilling basins. In this investigation we modeled the best methods which are suggested for designing of pipe outlet stilling basins. We tested all models in the same hydraulic conditions. To compare the results, a comparison has been made by using a dimensionless number; a performance number (P.N.). The performance umber which is defined in this investigation is the ratio of the depth of scour to the distance of the location of the maximum depth of scour from end of the stilling basin. With changing the angle of intermediate wall provided with USBR[42] and creating reverse slope in bottom of stilling basin, we could decrease the length of basin by 20% while performance of the new basin increased 45% in comparison with USBR model.
The results show that independent of the inflow Froude number, there is an optimum angle for intermediate wall for increasing the performance number of the basin, and reverse slope can also increase the performance number of basin. At the end of experiments, we tested the stability of all the basins modeled in front of tail water depth. The results show that the new basin with reverse slope and optimum angel of intermediate wall while has shorter length is more independent of the tail water depth.
